In Duisburg, Rheinhausen, it‘s known as the ‚Gypsy Home‘.
For many people it‘s an eyesore. A symbol of the horrifying poverty of immigration. The press refer to the bleak apartment block, which mainly houses Romanian immigrants, as the „Trouble Tower“. It‘s associated with garbage, violence and neglect.
Hardly anyone dare look inside. To most it is an island. Remote, isolated, and foreign. Were they to venture through the doors they would find residents afloat in a singularly dire world.
Author Tamara Milosevic found a personal access to the people who live in the building. She tells the story of their lives, their loves, aspirations, destinies and dreams.
“The Island” tells the story of those who are in search of a better future. With a documentary view, the film remains inside the building, allowing us to get close to the people and their stories. There is no garbage here. Only families, friendships and hope.
