Ethiopia, a land inbetween disunity and hope, one of the poorest countries in Africa. Most regions are inaccessible vastness and mountains, which are though to cross. There is nearly no infrastructure and no medical care. Most of the people live in a traditionell and old-fashioned way. A woman life counts not that much. The Film stays with women on their survival trip.
To bring a child into the world without medicial care is nearly unimaginable in our society. For Ethiopien women is that normality. To give birth is always a game between live and death. The hospital in Attat is a good example, what it means to help 24h.
The idea of the „waiting area“, is simple but genius. The film „Waiting area“ tells the story of four women, in personal portraits, they live in different regions of Ethiopia. All of them are connected through the fact of giving birth or had tried to deliver a baby.
The strongness of the protagonists and their unswerving willness to fight, spread an optimism which animates to react.

Äthiopien ein Land zwischen Zerissenheit und Hoffnung, eines der ärmsten Länder Afrikas. In den meisten Regionen dominieren unzugängliche Weiten und Berge welche schwer zu überquerende sind. Es existiert kaum Infrastruktur und so gut wie keine medizinische Betreuung. Die Menschen leben oft auf traditionelle Weise, das bedeutet, eine Frau ist nicht viel wert.
Was es bedeutet ohne medizinische Versorgung ein Kind zur Welt zu bringen, kann man sich in unserer Gesellschaft kaum noch vorstellen. Für äthiopische Frauen, ist das die Normalität. Eine Geburt ist jedes mal ein Spiel auf Leben und Tod. Der Film begleitet Menschen, die versuchen in diesem Überlebenskampf, Leben zu geben.
Das Krankenhauses in Attat ist ein gutes Beispiel dafür, was es bedeutet 24 Stunden Hilfe zu leisten. Die Idee des „Warteraums“ ist einfach aber genial. “Waiting area” erzählt in persönlichen Portraits die Geschichten von vier Frauen, aus unterschiedlichen Regionen in Äthiopien. Sie alle verbindet das Erlebnis der Geburt.
Die Stärke der Frauen und ihr unerschütterlicher Kämpfergeist, verbreiten einen Optimismus, der zum Handeln animiert.
